10 days old

a rare time while Quinn is awake (prior to being put on oxygen)
Quinn "looks" so much bigger in the pictures we've taken than he actually is, here is Brian's hand

Quinn's oxygen requirements have been improving since my last post (thankfully), he's now just on a bit over room air (the oxygen level that you breathe when not on a nasal cannula), he doesn't much like his cannula and has spent a lot of the day trying to pull it out.

I'm very happy on this front.

During our visit today, he slept almost he entire time and only nippled about 5mls of milk. It's so frustrating. This is exactly what Kaitlyn used to do and it's so hard not to make comparisons. Quinn was born so much "older" gestationally, but boy is it hard to not get worried.

Still abosutley no idea when he'll be coming home to us. He's 10 days old today and still under his birth weight. He's lost weight the last 3 nights.

I'm still not able to drive (c-section) or lift Kaitlyn so Brian and I are attached at the hip whenever I n eed to go anywhere. Yesterday Brian and I walked to lunch from the NICU, but I paid the price for my increased activity as I had some bleeding and cramping last night

Liz - I really hope Quinn is doing better. I loved reading through your "birth story" post. What a journey. I know this is so hard for you. The disappointment over a repeat of the NICU must be so intense. All you can do is hang in there. It is easy to make comparisons, but this should be a much shorter experience with a happy outcome.

BTW, my birthday is also July 21. I am happy to have such a special birthday buddy!

Sending you many cyber hugs, positive thoughts & prayers. I'm glad to read that Quinn is doing better, I can only imagine what it must feel like to be in the NICU again.

Be good to yourself, I had dh wheel me around a full 2 weeks after the c-section---best thing we could have ever done---LOL!!

Hugs & Blessings!

Hi Liz~ My daughter (who will be 1 in afew weeks) was born 10 days early and was only 5lbs 11oz. While she did fine with her breathing we had a REALLY hard time getting her to wake up and eat. The nurses tried EVERYTHING! She would nurse for a few minutes and fall right back to sleep. We had to set our alarm clock to wake her up in the middle of the night to eat. I think she was probably 3-4 weeks before she started to wake up on her own to eat. I'll be praying for you guys.

Hi Liz.

I have been reading your blog for several days now ( from the beginning) and I feel like I know you and your family. I am in Dallas, Texas. I have had one miscarriage and two ectopic pregnancies and I am turning 40 next week. I cannot afford to try IVF right now (maybe sometime in the future). I know you have been through so much with your children and I have to say, you seem to have handled it amazingly well. You are all amazing. I know its a lot to go through. I have a really difficult time dealing with not having a child.
I just wanted to wish you and your entire family well. Your children are beautiful.

Kristie, from Dallas, TX

The Bernard Bunch truly understands your hardships here. Not an easy time for Quinn and his family. Thank goodness you are such a sweet family and all able to hold in there for each other.
We are thinking of you lots and lots

Belated congratulations on the birth of the Mighty Quinn! The pictures you have taken are beautiful. It is SO nice that you are in so many of them. I would like to echo the commenter above. My son was born at 36 1/2 weeks and just wanted to sleep the day away. It took about six weeks before he really perked up and things started to click with breastfeeding. Just offering this as another example of a nearly term "preemie" taking some time to wake up to the world without it being an indicator of feeding problems to come. Here's hoping that little Quinn just needs a little extra time. Congratulations again!

Just today I deleted from "my favorites" the entry "grams to ounces" I am so thankful we are no longer needing to count the grams gained!!! You will be there soon. Prayers from Louisiana

Liz, I wish I could give you a hug. I cried as I read your post about hearing Quinn cry right after he was born. Nobody but the mom of an extreme preemie can really understand what a wonderful sound that is! I'm sorry to hear he's still in the NICU, but I trust the doctors will soon figure out what's troubling him. Quinn is in my prayers.

Hey, congrats Liz! I emailed you yesterday, but don't know if I got your sddress correct. Sounds like our boys are conspiring together somehow. Both of mine have been super slow to pick up on their eating. REally they only did so in the last few days. Jackson also needed 02 for a bit (CPAP then canula). Hope the coming days go quickly and quinn grows and matures a ton! Email me when you get a chance. jbhwalker@hotmail.com

Liz, I know Quinn will pull through and back to 'normal' any day now. He has Angel Corrine watching over him, so no doubt he is in good hands. We can't wait to see you and meet him. Please let me know when is appropriate to come up to the house or hospital. We'd also love to have cousin Kaitlyn spend the day with us - the kids miss her.

You are an amazing woman and mother. God only gives us what we can handle -- so apparently he trusts you a great deal. You are very loved and have affected a great number of people's lives with your story. Much love, Whitney

Our 34.5 week twins were very sleepy also--and I did the NG tube and breastfeeding with them. They ended up being in the NICU for 15 days, and it was only the last 1-2 days that they really started to gain and be awake. So, take heart--when he turns the corner, you won't be able to get him to stop eating and sleeping :-) One twin gained something like 8 ounces in a day and everyone thought the scales were broken, but that's what she did and gained her birthweight back in three days or something like that.
