Another procedure...

Well, I'm tired, but just wanted to post a quick report. Kaitlyn is having a Bronchoscope (sp?) procedure tomorrow to check what is up with her seemingly non-functioning vocal cords. She will be sedated, but not under a general.

Here's a cute picture from a few days ago when she was actually awake (which is rare). She is still not eating much on her own (so she is still having to be gavaged- a tube inserted through her mouth to her stomach. She HATES this and gags every time. Mom hates to watch it).

She now weighs 5 pounds 3 ounces.

Liz,
Thank you for your comment on our blog. I hope our story can be a source of hope and support for you in the days to come! I wanted to let you know that neither Holland or Eden cried or made much noise in the NICU, especially Eden. My husband and I thought there must be something wrong, but the docs reassured us that it was likely just the result of being intubated for so long. They were right and both girls use their voices now. Eden was always quiet, even after coming home, and we had to listen very carefully to know when she was crying. She made more of a hissing sound than an actual cry. Since she has gotten her cochlear implant her voice has gotten louder. I've wondered if her hearing loss contributed to her lack of voice??? That may be something to look into once other things are ruled out. I've heard that damage to the vocal cords from the PDA ligation is VERY uncommon. I hope the bronchoscope goes well. Best wishes,
Billie

hi liz
fellow preemie mom again. my son had a surgery too last week, well ended up being more complicated than planned. these procedures and surgeries make us moms feel nervous, but babies bounce back pretty soon. i pray that the procedure helps and your precious lil one is home soon.

My son had to have a bronhoscope, too. after he had been put back on a vent at 2 weeks old and was still on it at 7 weeks. No one could determine what was wrong with him. The bronchoscope provided the answers we needed and he was finally able to have the surgery that ultimately cured him (he had a dual aortic arch that was preventing him from being able tp eat or breathe). I hope Kaitlyn's procedure provides some answers to you, as well. Brayden couldn't make any noise for a couple of weeks after coming off the vent, but his voice gradually returned. Best of luck to you guys, and I'll be thinking of you.
